The Mountain Cafe is situated within the North Egmont Visitors Centre almost 1000 metres up Mt Taranaki at North Egmont. An ideal location for people seeking quiet surroundings and stunning views of the North Taranaki coast and Central North Island. It also offers pleasant atmosphere and access to the beautiful forests and high altitude scenery of Egmont National Park. 

We serve fresh mountain meals, daily baked cakes and muffins from our cafe kitchen. Andy & Terese, renowned for their savoury cuisine are our chefs. They love to attend to all our regular clientele

from all over the world and New Zealand, who always return for their special delights. We also provide guests with Mountain Picnics to carry with them to enjoy amongst the unique rainforests and alpine scenery.

Where else can you nibble on a delicious muffin and take in the mighty rainforests, alpine scenery and surreal views over the Taranaki farmland to the coast below. On a clear day Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe stand dominant on the distant skyline.

 We can cater for groups up to 50 people in our cafe. Weddings, Birthdays, Events, Group Talks - DOC will speak to you on Egmont National Park, "our special place". Reservations Essential

Mt Egmont / Mount Taranaki tramping

Egmont National Park is an area of unique rainforests and alpine scenery. It provides opportunities for walks, tramps, picnics, photography, birdwatching, skiing, mountaineering, rockclimbing and generally enjoying the variety of scenery and habitats of New Zealands most attractive and symmetrical mountain.

The North Egmont Visitor Centre has informative displays and a 20 minute audio-visual. Interpretive talks and walks with DOC staff can be arranged for school and special interest groups.

North Egmont is the major starting point for most walks, tramps and activities.

Short Walks

• Connett Walk - Beautiful kamahi forest dripping with mosses and lichens.
• Ngatoro Walk - Look for the red peeling bark of kaikawaka and totara.
• Veronica Walk - Choose a quiet evening and listen carefully for kiwi in this area. There are also great views to from the nearby Trig Point.
• Nature Walk - an ideal walk to fill in 10 minutes and get a quick look at North Egmont rainforests.

Access is located from Egmont Village on State Highway 3, turn up Egmont Road and follow for 16km to the roadend. New Plymouth to North Egmont is a pleasant 30 minute drive along sealed roads. A shuttle bus can be arranged from our Egmont Eco Lodge for groups( Ph 06 753 5720 ) in New Plymouth.
